Benefits of Paver Stone Patios
More than just a pretty slate
Durable and beautiful, patio pavers are a popular choice for creating an outdoor living space you can enjoy for years to come. Outside of the occasional cleaning and sealing, pavers won’t warp or rot like wood, or crack like stamped concrete. There are a number of other reasons to make paving stones your design element of choice. They’re durable, simple to clean, and easy to maintain.
Learn more about the benefits of patio pavers below:
Easy to clean
While concrete and asphalt can develop stains and be difficult to clean properly, paving stones can be washed off neatly with soap and water. Sealant applied to the stones can assist in making this chore even easier.
Durability
Because of the material and their many joints, patio pavers are usually stronger than most home foundations. These pavers are not prone to cracking and are often covered by manufacturers with lifetime guarantees.
Simpler to maintain
Inclement weather, developing moisture, and the variance in temperatures from seasonal extremes can cause the ground to expand and contract. Eventually this means cracks will occur in weak spots in any material, including slabs of concrete. Because paving stones have more places that join and shift naturally with the ground, they are less likely to be affected by weather. In addition, if any cracks do occur, the cost to replace one or two patio pavers is much less than if you need to pour a large concrete slab.

Our Full-Service Paver Installation Process
Step 1
Prep the Area
Before the paver installation process begins, we conduct pre-demolition — locating all utilities (electric, gas, water, etc.) to prevent any problems during installation.
Demolition then takes place to remove your existing hard-surface through the use of a Bobcat machine, demolition tools and saw-cutting where necessary. This is typically needed along areas where your home’s foundation protrudes into the space where pavers are to be installed.
Step 2
Place the Foundation
Placing the foundation includes excavation, grading (recommended to create necessary water flow away from your home) and sub-base compacting using a plate compactor to remove air gaps.
We then prepare the base with six inches of Class II Road Base for vehicular areas and four inches for the pedestrian areas. Once the base is set, it’s hosed down and compacted until a compaction level of 95% is reached.
Sand preparation then takes place with one inch of bedding sand laid down over the base.
Step 3
Paver Installation
Once the area has been prepared and the foundation placed, we will lay string lines out from your house and lay the pavers according to the design plans.
Step 4
Edging Installation
When the entire field of pavers has been laid, we will take the border stone of your choice and place it around the outside of the field — each cut with a wet saw to perfection and placed back in their appropriate location.
After all the borders have been cut, the areas underneath the border stones will be trenched, a concrete footing poured in the trenches and the border stones tamped down into place. Once the concrete finishes drying, any excess concrete on the sides is removed.
Step 5
Adding and Compacting Joint Sand
After all the pavers have been laid, a plate compactor is used to compact all the pavers down into the bedding sand.
Sand is then brought up 1/4 inch on the stone, interlocking the stones. Additional sand is brought in to compact from the top down to completely fill all the paver joints.
Step 6
Cleaning and Sealing
Once the joints have been completely filled with the sand, all excess sand and debris will be removed and the pavers hosed off.
Sealant is optional but recommended to lock in the joints and prevent weeds or any other growth from occurring between the pavers.

What Our San Diego Clients Are Saying
Frequently Asked Questions About Paver Patio Installation
What type of pavers are best for patios?
For San Diego backyards, we typically use different pavers for different purposes. Natural stone looks elegant for gathering spaces, porcelain works great around pools (since it’s slip-resistant), and premium concrete pavers hold up really well in high-traffic areas. It really depends on how you plan to use each space.
Is a paver patio expensive?
The largest issue people mention when considering pavers is the upfront cost. While, over time, maintenance of a stone patio will save you money, the expenses at the beginning are around 30% more than other options. The material is heavy to transport and requires specialized crews to install. Despite this, an improvement in aesthetics and improved home value make stone pavers a wise choice.
How long does a paver patio installation take? Is it a huge install?
The work required, depending on the area of your patio, means a relatively large-scale construction project. Installation with an experienced crew can take 3-5 days and means some substantial work to level the sand and gravel, as well as laying, sealing, and edging the paving stones. However, unlike a concrete patio, once it is put in, you can walk on it immediately. Concrete usually takes 3 days or so to cure – so the timing before use is basically the same.
How long will my paver patio last?
Expect decades of enjoyment from your patio. Our materials and installation methods are chosen specifically for Southern California weather conditions, backed by manufacturer warranties against breaking and cracking.
What about weeds?
Additional joints means more chances for weeds to grow. The use of polymer sand in joints hardens and does not allow weeds to break through. While not 100% effective it can reduce weed intrusions by over 95% when compared to patios that do not use this material. Provided that you have the foresight and the means at the outset, you will be very happy with the choice of stone pavers for your patio in the long run. The versatility, aesthetic choices available, and ease of maintenance make it ideal for a homeowner who wants a beautiful product without the need to work hard (or pay more) on upkeep. If you live in San Diego, CA, we can provide you with a stone patio that you will love.
Should my patio pavers match my home's exterior?
Beautiful patios complement your home’s style without exact matching. We help you design pavers that work with your home’s character—whether it’s Spanish colonial, modern coastal, or classic ranch. Our designs create outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of your home.
